A Brand New Film Festival for a Brand New Year

Happy New Year to everyone! 

As promised, our weekly film nights at the Victoria Park Baptist Church are set to resume on Thursday, the 12th of January.

As we sink our teeth into 2023 (a date that has no right to exist outside of pulp science fiction) I plan to embark on a brand new film series, which we shall be exploring over the next few months.

Anyone who has been following the trends of social and cultural discourse over the last decade or so may be reminded of a song made famous by Groucho Marx in the film Horse Feathers:


"Whatever it is, I'm against it" could almost be the battle cry for our modern age. Our increasingly tribal society has been marked by outrage, protests and of course, everyone's favourite: Cancel Culture.

It is Cancel Culture that I want to explore in our new film series, which is why the series is going to be called

Down With [complete as required]

Although the terminology may be new, the concepts of persecution, oppression and ostracism are essentially as old as the human race itself. Ever since human beings started forming themselves into groups or communities, we have been deciding who should then be excluded from those groups or communities. 

There is absolutely nothing new about the "public shaming of those deemed moral transgressors" as the New York Times once described it.

The films I have chosen for this series all deal with these ideas in one way or another. Some of these films are going to be controversial. Some of them are extremely hard-hitting, while others are pure escapist fun. Doubtless there will be a few issues (and people) explored here that some of you will feel deserve to be cancelled, while others epitomize the very definitions of totalitarian oppression.

That's the point.

A good film, like any work of art, should promote discussion and reflection. Silencing a voice does not make a problem go away, and it is difficult to grow as a culture if we actively make ourselves smaller.


Starting with our first film on the 12th of January, I hope to put the Culture back into Cancel Culture.

At the beginning of last week's film, Ellen Wagstaff Arden has been lost at sea (missing; presumed dead) while engaged as the photographer for an anthropological expedition to Indo-China. While that back-story was obviously developed to establish the premise of the entire film (that she returns after a long absence to find her husband re-married) it is, I think, very notable that her character is shown to have a successful  career . Irrespective of the fact that she is supposed to be married with two young children, the (husband-and-wife) writers of My Favorite Wife saw no conflict in depicting a female character who had a life and a vocation that extended beyond her identity as merely wife and mother. Women in the 1930s were generally seen as people . They were allowed to have ambitions and aspirations that extended beyond "finding a man" and "becoming a mother". A film about what now??

One of the least shocking aspects of this week's film is the fact that it owes its existence to Charles Boyer and a cockroach. I should probably explain. In 1941, Billy Wilder wrote the screenplay for a film called Hold Back the Dawn . The story takes place in a small Mexican town just over the US border, where refugees congregate and wait (often for years) for their entry visas to be approved.  Billy Wilder had done his own stretch in just such a town, and the screenplay was written with a great deal of personal experience.  But the specific story he tells in the film follows the fortunes of a French/Romanian gigolo (ultimately played by Charles Boyer) who decides to shortcut his visa application by seducing and marrying a gullible American woman. One early scene in Wilder's script featured Boyer's character hitting emotional rock-bottom in his sweltering Mexican hotel room and conducting an existential conversation with a cockroach. Down With... Architecture!??

  Okay, folks, this one is just plain bonkers. We've had a month or so of fairly heavy films that tackle some difficult topics (Evolution; Witch-burning; Segregation; Rape.. nice, uncontentious subjects) so it's about time we pause for some refreshment. The rest of March is going to be fun, fun, fun. Say hello to Ayn Rand. Ayn Rand was born in Russia to a well-educated, upper-middle class Jewish family. The October Revolution of 1917 brought her comfortable childhood to a very sudden and violent end (she was twelve at the time) and her family lost absolutely everything.   Movie Nights at the  Victoria Park Baptist Church And so life goes on. Some of you may remember that our film series in early 2020 was rudely interrupted by a Global Pandemic. The subsequent year and a half has been, well... You know things are pretty bad when you find yourself wondering if there is a plural for "Apocalypse". But at any rate, here we are ( Apocalypses? Apocali? That's going to bother you now, isn't it?) facing the prospect of attempting to pick up the pieces of Civilisation - assuming of course we don't go into another Lockdown first. ( Apocalyae?   Apocalim? ) Movie-going, like so many communal activities, has taken a severe hit during the Pandemic, and I'm willing to hazard a guess that most of the films you have watched over the last eighteen months have been from the comfort of home, with, at most, a family member or two. New Year; New Film Season!

 Happy New Year to everyone! I know that "time" is starting to lose its meaning after two years of this dystopian, apocalyptic nightmare we have all been enduring for the last two years, but who knows; maybe 2022 will be different. What is clear, at least in the short term, is that our Thursday-night film evenings at the Victoria Park Baptist Church will be resuming on the 13th of January. The Church's roof works are still ongoing, so we will still be gathering in the basement (the Crypt!) but the films will still be completely free and open to everyone. Last year, I deliberately chose "classic" films that were explicitly uplifting and (dare I use the F-word) Fun . I felt that we all needed some quality time at the movies, losing ourselves in some truly great cinema, and enjoying the experience of being able to sit in a darkened theatre for a couple of hours, sharing a movie-going experience with like-minded people.  That what cinema can do (at its best).
